Update

Hello parents and guardians,
LANGUAGE ARTS
We have been working on writing the five paragraph essay. The students should all have their jot notes compete and be working on their paragraphs. The template that they put their jot notes on should help them with their paragraphing as each section in their jot notes will become one paragraph in the body of their essay. They will also create an introduction with a thesis statement for their first paragraph. The last paragraph will be a closing paragraph. I gave them a template to create their thesis statement in, and this statement should relate to each of the body paragraphs. Over the next few days we will work to make sure the thesis statement is correct and that it is the "road map" for the body of their essay. We will also focus on writing a "hook" for each paragraph; a sentence which grabs the reader. We will learn about transition words and how to use them effectively at the beginning of each paragraph, and add them in as part of one of the two revisions.

Here is the format that we will follow.

This is a handout on the writing process. It was modified for this project, but this one should give you an idea of the process that we will follow to write the essay from start to finish. It includes a format for the thesis statement on the final page.

MATH
We are working on the last lesson in unit two of Math Makes Sense. This is a unit on integers. Next week we will work on the unit review, the practice test, and then have a final test. Tentatively we plan to have the test at the end of next week. Students will need to have an understanding of integers - adding and subtracting integers using tiles, a number line, and the "rules".
Working in the smaller math groups seems to be working very well. Both Mr. Herrick and I feel like this has allowed us to have a much better understanding of who needs extra instruction and support and then give that support.

THE NEW CLASSROOM
The new portable is ready. It has been painted, has new white boards, new bulletin boards, a smart board, a sound system, a student storage area, and lights that work on a sensor. We are all very excited to get moved in. The plan is to start moving over today.

THANKSGIVING ASSEMBLY
Next week our class will lead the Thanksgiving Assembly. We are currently doing work on complaining and gratitude. Many of our daily complaints are not really problems at all, and that is what we are working on preparing for our assembly. Parents are welcome to attend. Students will put the date and time in their agenda today.

PUBLIC LIBRARY
Today we will walk to Rusty McDonald to return the books we borrowed. Students can bring their card to take out another book if they would like.

THE MENDEL
The Mendel Art Gallery has invited me to bring my class to celebrate the gallery's birthday. We will walk to the Mendel on the morning of October 16th. I will send a permission slip home today. This celebration is free for us and includes a tour and some festivities. Very few teachers were given this opportunity so I feel very grateful to have been asked. :) (working on gratitude)

Have a great weekend!
